Nicaragua expels more than 200 political prisoners to the United States

Nicaragua expelled at least 222 prisoners to the United States, as confirmed by the Nicaraguan Justice this Thursday.

Those expelled had been declared “traitors to the homeland” and permanently disqualified from exercising public office as well as holding positions of popular election “remaining suspended their citizen rights in perpetuity,” indicated the Nicaraguan Justice.

One of the beneficiaries of the measure would be Felix Maradiaga, a former presidential candidate, as confirmed by his wife Bertha Valle in an audio published on her social networks.

As of January 2023, there were 245 political prisoners in Nicaragua in the country, according to the Mechanism for the recognition of political prisoners.

It was not clear if the 222 people expelled on Thursday matched this group.

According to the report, there are 215 men and 30 women, and the list includes 10 political prisoners detained before 2018.
