The viral “Gen Z stare”—the blank, silent expression sometimes associated online with awkward interactions involving younger people—may be little more than an exaggerated generational joke. But researchers say the phenomenon points toward a much more significant social change: people are actually speaking less than they used to, and the decline is particularly pronounced among younger generations.
Research published in Perspectives on Psychological Science analyzed recordings from more than 2,000 participants in the United States and several other countries. The researchers found that the average amount of speech declined by approximately 300 words per person per day for every passing year between 2005 and 2019.
Overall, that represents a remarkable 28% reduction in daily spoken words during the period. The decline was especially pronounced among people younger than 25.
The findings suggest that a cultural shift toward quieter daily lives was already underway before the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically disrupted face-to-face interaction.
Technology is one obvious explanation, although researchers caution that the evidence does not establish a single cause. Smartphones, texting, social media, online shopping, self-checkout machines, remote work and digital entertainment have gradually eliminated countless small conversations that were once routine.
Activities that previously required talking to another person—from ordering food and asking for directions to arranging plans or purchasing something—can increasingly be completed without saying anything at all.
The change matters because speaking is more cognitively demanding than simply consuming information.
When people talk, their brains must rapidly select words, organize ideas, interpret another person’s reactions and adjust responses in real time. Conversation also requires attention, memory and social judgment. Scientists therefore increasingly view ordinary conversation as a form of cognitive exercise rather than merely a way of exchanging information.
That raises an important question: If people speak substantially less, could they also be losing some of the mental stimulation provided by regular conversation?
Researchers do not yet have a definitive answer.
Some studies suggest that frequent social interaction is associated with better cognitive health, while social isolation and loneliness have been linked with poorer health outcomes. But scientists emphasize that talking less does not automatically mean someone’s brain is deteriorating, and the new research does not prove that reduced speech causes cognitive decline.
The trend also should not be interpreted simply as a problem with Generation Z.
Although the decline was strongest among younger people, Americans across age groups have become more dependent on digital communication. Text messages, group chats and social platforms allow people to remain socially connected while replacing some spoken conversations with written exchanges.
For younger adults, however, the effects may be particularly important because adolescence and early adulthood traditionally provide enormous amounts of practice navigating uncomfortable social situations.
A face-to-face conversation forces people to respond immediately. There is no editing button and usually no opportunity to spend several minutes constructing the perfect answer. Awkwardness, misunderstanding, humor, disagreement and reconciliation all become part of learning how to communicate.
Digital communication changes that dynamic.
Online interactions allow people to carefully formulate responses—or avoid responding altogether. Researchers and psychologists are therefore interested in whether younger generations are receiving less practice developing conversational confidence and interpreting subtle social signals.
At the same time, experts caution against romanticizing previous generations. Every generation has experienced anxieties about new communication technologies, from telephones and television to email and social media. Younger people may simply be developing different communication habits rather than losing the ability to communicate altogether.
The “Gen Z stare” itself also remains primarily an internet stereotype, not a scientifically established behavior unique to Generation Z. What research can demonstrate is the broader decline in spoken communication.
That distinction is important.
The real story is not that one generation suddenly forgot how to talk. It is that modern life increasingly allows everyone to navigate the world without speaking, and society is only beginning to understand what that transformation might mean.
Scientists now want to determine whether fewer conversations affect memory, language skills, emotional development and long-term cognitive health—and whether deliberately creating more opportunities for face-to-face interaction could provide measurable benefits.
The viral stare may eventually disappear along with countless other social-media trends. But the behavior underneath the joke points toward something potentially much more consequential: a world in which people remain constantly connected digitally while increasingly spending their days saying fewer words out loud.
