As the Trump administration works to accelerate the expansion of nuclear power in the United States, federal regulators are proposing one of the most significant changes to radiation safety policy in decades. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is seeking to eliminate the “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” (ALARA) principle, a cornerstone of radiation protection that has guided nuclear regulation in the United States and many other countries for more than 50 years. The proposal has ignited a sharp debate between supporters who argue it would modernize outdated regulations and critics who fear it could weaken public health protections.
The ALARA principle requires nuclear facilities to minimize radiation exposure whenever it is practical to do so, even when exposure levels remain below legal limits. Rather than treating regulatory thresholds as acceptable targets, the policy encourages operators to continually reduce radiation risks for workers and the public. However, they argue that the appropriate solution would be to clarify how the principle should be applied rather than eliminate it entirely. The proposal comes as the United States seeks to dramatically expand nuclear generation to meet future electricity demand while reducing carbon emissions. Industry leaders contend that excessive regulatory complexity has delayed projects and increased construction costs for decades. Meanwhile, environmental groups and radiation experts caution that accelerating reactor deployment should not come at the expense of long-established public-health safeguards.
