Miami Beach establishes curfew after second fatal shooting during “spring break”

The city of Miami Beach has declared a state of emergency and a midnight curfew following two fatal shooting incidents and “excessively large and unruly crowds,” according to a city news release.

“In response to the two shootings and the excessively large and unruly crowds, and to mitigate dangerous and illegal conduct, the City of Miami Beach is ordering a state of emergency and curfew from 11:59 p.m. from Sunday, March 19, 2023 until 6 a.m. on Monday, March 20, 2023,” the statement said. “The city will hold a special meeting Monday afternoon to discuss possible restrictions beyond Monday.”

The city manager also plans to impose additional restrictions, according to the release, from March 23 to 27.

Violence erupted in popular South Beach on Friday amid the St. Patrick’s Day festivities and spring break celebrations. One person died and another was injured, according to authorities. Four firearms were seized from the scene, police said.
